When Ava’s next mission in Riyad goes terribly wrong, she is barely able to get away, and not without leaving lots of dead bodies in her wake. Ava reaches out to her handler, Duke (John Malkovich), to find out what happened with the Riyad mission, but he assured her it was nothing more than a simple error in developing her cover. However, Duke wants to ensure Ava’s safety from the organization, so he goes to speak with the current director, Simon (Colin Farrell), on Ava’s behalf. Simon shares the concerns that he has about Ava, but Duke makes him promise to leave her alone; however, not willing to risk the business, Simon goes behind Duke’s back and places a hit on Ava. Ava’s search for those looking to kill her takes her to many old places and people from her past (including Joan Chen). When she realizes that her employers are trying to kill her, Ava struggles with what to do, both to keep herself and her estranged family safe, but with every attempt on her life, she uses her extensive training to stop those trying to kill her.
This action-packed thriller is a captivating story from start to finish. Chastain brings a strong presence to both her fight and addiction struggle scenes. The plot is not overly complex, but the action, dialog, and cast keep the movie from being a pointless, violent waste of time. The action of Ava will keep viewers on the edge of their seat until the thrilling conclusion.
