“I’m not sure… but I do know I’m gonna live every minute of it.”

From Soul.

Since he was a child, Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx) has had an unquenchable passion for jazz music. Despite his lifelong pursuit, Joe’s been unable to fully reach his goal and is stuck as a middle school band teacher. When a former student (Questlove) offers Joe the opportunity to play with jazz legend, Dorothea (Angela Bassett), Joe is thrilled for the opportunity, even though he decides to keep it secret from his serious mom (Phylicia Rashad). However, a misstep leads to Joe’s soul landing right outside the Great Beyond, but unready to die, Joe runs away and escape to the other end of the spectrum: the Great Before for unborn souls. Two of the counselors (Alice Braga and Richard Ayoade) for the unborn souls mistake Joe as a mentor for unborn soul 22 (Tina Fey), and Joe goes along with them to find a way back. Meanwhile another counselor, Terry (Rachel House), realizes that the numbers for the Great Beyond are off, so he begins searching for Joe and 22. Joe tries to help 22 find her passion, but they realize that with her unwillingness to live and Joe’s desire to not die, they could help each other… if they can just get Joe back to his body. With no idea how to do that, 22 takes Joe to see her friend Moonwind (Graham Norton) for help. Moonwind is able to open a portal to Joe’s body, but the overexcited Joe jumps in before the portal is completely ready, pulling 22 in with him by mistake. Because the portal wasn’t fully open, Joe finds his soul stuck in a hospital therapy cat while 22 is stuck in his human body. Both Joe and 22 are very unhappy with their respective situation as the reluctant-to-live 22 must learn how to be Joe’s voice and hands as the pair try to fix the mistake before Joe misses the biggest opportunity of his life forever.

The newest Pixar film is full of subtle humor, genuine heart, and mesmerizing animation. Foxx and Fey both give a uniqueness to their characters, providing viewers a solid hold during the story’s more complex moments. Soul is a heartfelt comedy that quickly develops into a surprising, unforgettable adventure.
