“I guess it’s just a question of which of the two species does it first.”

From The Silence.

After freeing some mysterious creatures from an underground cave in Pennsylvania, the world has unknowingly been placed in danger by the murderous flying animals.  While the day starts normally for deaf teen Ally (Kiernan Shipka) as she goes to school with her friend (Dempsey Bryk), night brings on an inescapable nightmare.  Dinner with her parents (Stanley Tucci and Miranda Otto), younger brother (Kyle Harrison Breitkopf), and grandmother (Kate Trotter) is the last bit of normal for them.  When Ally’s mom wakes her up in the middle of the night to watch the news reports about mysterious attacks on cities, Ally is scared, so the family decides to join her father’s best friend, Glenn (John Corbett), in leaving their New York City suburb for the safety of the quiet, unpopulated countryside.  As the family takes off, they join the mass of people trying to escape the overpopulated cities in the face of the plague of murderous monsters that the media has dubbed vesps.  With no understanding of what the creatures are, it does quickly become evident to the world that silence is the only way to survive as the vesps will swarm and kill at the slightest noise.  While the family is able to find a cabin in the woods, Ally’s mom is scratched, which forces Ally and her dad to search for antibiotics.  When the father and daughter find antibiotics in a nearby town, they also attract the attention of a man who calls himself the Reverend (Billy MacLellan).  The Reverend follows them home, trying to convince the family to join his cult instead of heading north in search of a rumored refugee camp.  Desperate to survive the vesps, Ally and her family fight together in one final, silent push, as they quickly learn that humanity may pose just as much of a threat as noise.

This sci-fi thriller is full of action and suspense, which keeps the story moving quickly.  Based on the book by Tim Lebbon, the story is incredible similar to 2018’s A Quiet Place, but the story is still enjoyable for fans of the post-apocalyptic genre.  The Silence is filled with tense moments and impressive special effects to keep viewers engaged from start to finish.
