When Gatsby (Timothée Chalamwt) learns that his girlfriend, Ashleigh (Elle Fanning), has landed an interview with movie director Roland Pollard (Liev Schreiber) in New York City, he is excited for the chance to show her the city where he grew up. However, when the two arrive in New York, Ashleigh instantly connects with the moody director, and he invites her to preview his latest movie with the screenwriter, Ted (Jude Law). Eager for a scoop, Ashleigh tells Gatsby that she’ll meet him later, but as the day progresses, she is drawn into more drama with Roland and Ted. Left waiting for Ashleigh, Gatsby wanders around the city and stumbles upon an old friend in the middle of filming a student film. Gatsby is drafted to be an extra in the film and finds himself in a kissing scene with his ex-girlfriend’s younger sister, Chan (Selena Gomez). Despite their bickering, Gatsby and Chan spend a few hours together catching up and comparing their appreciation of New York City’s romantic potential, especially in the rain. Meanwhile, while searching for a missing and drunk Roland with Ted, Ashleigh meets the attractive actor, Francisco (Diego Luna), and soon finds herself a sort of muse for all three men. Gatsby now finds himself with no girlfriend, no special weekend, and no excuse not to go to the over-the-top party that his mother (Cherry Jones) is hosting. On what was supposed to be an exciting and romantic weekend, the all-alone Gatsby is forced to evaluate his life in order to decide what to do with his seemingly depressing future.

Woody Allen’s comedy begins with a somewhat choppy style, but the film eventually finds its stride, even for viewers that are not fans of Allen’s work. Chalamet brings a witty and slightly melodramatic captivation to his role. A big, talented cast, and a gorgeous background come together to make A Rainy Day in New York a sweet film that will appeal to almost all viewers.
