“To be or not to be: that is my question for you!”

From Stuck.

Caught up in the nonstop hustle and bustle of New York City life, the lives of six strangers quickly comes to a screeching halt when the subway train they are all riding gets stuck in a tunnel.  Initially sharing the train for a few stops, the homeless, but eccentric Lloyd (Giancarlo Esposito), the shy and grieving Sue (Amy Madigan), the overworked Ramon (Omar Chaparro) who works multiple jobs to provide for his family, the aspiring artist Caleb (Gerard Canonico) struggling to overcome his awkwardness and talk to the girl he likes, the traumatized dancer Alicia (Arden Cho) that lets her pain drive her attitude, and the pregnant and alone Eve (Ashanti) all find themselves stuck together.  While quiet and separate right after when the train stops, as time drags on, several of the passengers begin to talk to each other and stress out together about their current situation.  However, their trapped situation also quickly leads to arguments and disagreements as Caleb is both ignored and belittled by Alicia, Sue fumbles her attempts to connect with Eve and Ramon, and Lloyd’s loud personality puts everyone on edge.  The six strangers entered the train car with invisible baggage and unrealized ideologies, but the longer that they’re stuck together, the more Alicia, Eve, Sue, Caleb, Lloyd, and Ramon realize that their assumptions about their fellow passengers could not be further from the truth.

This modern musical is filled with catchy music and a talented cast that brings the story to life.  The movie is mainly filmed in a subway car, but it is done in a way that keeps things from feeling cramped.  It’s a thought-provoking story that highlights the importance of getting to know people before judging them.  Stuck also serves as a reminder that human suffering is often easier to carry when the burden of pain is shared with others.
