From The Warrior Queen of Jhansi.
In 1858, the East India Company is a practically-unstoppable force for the United Kingdom all across the globe, and their methods have placed them at great odds with the many divided kingdoms of India. In England, Queen Victoria (Jodhi May) struggles with how to proceed while Prime Minister Palmerston (Derek Jacobi) pushes for a crushing blow to the recent rebellious uprising in India while Victoria’s helper, Saleem (Omar Malik), humbly urges her to look for compromise. Rani Saheb (Devika Bhise), the Indian queen of the region of Jhansi, is desperately seeking help to stop the Indian rebellion that threatens both the Indian and British citizens in her land. After the death of her husband (Milind Gunaji) several years earlier, Rani Saheb has been left fighting to keep control of their kingdom from the British until her adopted son is old enough to take control of their land. However, Rani Saheb’s many pleas for an alliance to stop the rebellion have been ignored by the East India Company representative Robert Hamilton (Nathaniel Parker) assigned to the region, and she has been left with no other option than to train a small army of women to fight against the rebellion and any misguided British soldiers that attack her kingdom. As General Hugh Rose (Rupert Everett) moves troops from the Company across India to attack Jhansi as punishment for not stopping the mutiny, Major Ellis (Ben Lamb) is sent to get Rani Saheb to surrender, but she refuses to abandon Jhansi. While the well-trained and larger East India Company soldiers are able to take the Jhansi fort and force Rani Saheb to flee to neighboring kingdoms, her unwillingness to surrender makes her a symbol of rebellion to all those she meets and pushes her to gather allies to attack the British in one final push for freedom.
Inspired by the true events and the bravery of the young queen, this story is an inspiring story. The costumes and set design is breathtaking, although the story seems a bit jumbled at times. Bhise effortlessly brings the history-making queen to life though, which is the real driving force behind Warrior Queen of Jhansi.
