From True History of the Kelly Gang.
As a boy growing up in Australia in the mid-1800’s, Ned Kelly (Orlando Schwerdt) lived in poverty with a drunk, criminal father and a mother, Ellen (Essie Davis), willing to do anything to ensure a future for her children. When Ned’s father dies in prison, Ellen ignores the advances of a local sergeant, O’Neill (Charlie Hunnam), and instead brings thief Harry Power (Russell Crowe) into their lives. Harry takes young need Ned for what is supposed to be a cattle drive and the boy is excited, but Ned quickly realizes that Harry is a violent, murderous man. After shooting O’Neill in the leg under Harry’s vengeful orders, Ned flees home, but is still imprisoned for years as punishment. As an adult, Ned (George MacKay) tries to make an honest living, but when he goes home, he finds that his mother’s new boyfriend, George (Marlon Williams), has led Ned’s younger brother, Dan (Earl Cave) into a life as a thief. When returning dresses Dan stole from a brothel, Ned befriends a young constable named Alexander (Nicholas Hoult) and a young mother, Mary (Thomasin McKenzie), which leads to a short period of peaceful happiness for Ned. However after his mother attacks Alexander, Ned intervenes and is then forced to run with Dan and their friends, Joe (Sean Keenan) and Steve (Louis Hewison). On the run from the police, Ned decides to embrace the life he has been trying to escape, so he names his group the Kelly Gang and begins building an army to take back his family’s honor once and for all.
Dark and gritty in every aspect, this movie has a captivating, but mystifying vibe. It’s powerful to watch MacKay struggle throughout the film with his inner demons. The story is violent, intense, and definitely not for everyone, but those looking for a story from the darker side of history will find it in True History of the Kelly Gang.
