From Enola Holmes.
Raised by her eccentric mother, Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter), young Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) has been allowed to grow up bold, curious, wild, and free. Enola’s Mother has been sure to fill her life with activities and passions that let her thrive both mentally and physically. However, Enola’s life is completely thrown off course when she wakes up on her sixteenth birthday to find that her mother is gone, leaving only a few birthday gifts in her absence. Enola’s older brothers, the wealthy and proper Mycroft (Sam Claflin) and the brilliant detective Sherlock (Henry Cavill), arrive at the family home to discover what happened to their mother. Mycroft is appalled to see the state of Enola’s upbringing and the estate’s disrepair, so he plans to send Enola to a girl’s finishing school (led by Fiona Shaw) while Sherlock searches for Eudoria. Unwilling to give up on her mother or her freedom, Enola begins looking for her mother and realizes that her birthday gifts are actually clues that she left behind. When she boards a train to London, Enola witnesses a young runaway Viscount Tewksbury (Louis Partridge) being attacked by the man (Burn Gorman) that was sent to rescue him by his family (Frances de la Tour, Hattie Morahan, and David Bamber), so she intervenes to help Tewksbury escape to safety. While following her mother’s trail, Enola realizes that Tewksbury is in greater danger than she realized, so she puts her search on hold to help the boy, while also trying to avoid the police (led by Adeel Akhtar) and her older brothers’ expectations for her life.
Inspired by the juvenile book series, this mystery is captivating, fun, and highly endearing; it easily brings fresh, new life to the classic Sherlock Holmes stories. Brown leads with a genuine sweetness that effortlessly draws the viewer to her, especially when coupled with the film’s styling and many fourth-wall breaks. Enola Holmes is a surprising story that will keep viewers engaged to the very end.
