From The Broken Hearts Gallery.
Working at a New York City art gallery for a strict boss, Lucy (Geraldine Viswanathan) is trying to balance work and love while working towards her lifelong goal of one day running her own gallery. Lucy is madly in love with Max (Utkarsh Ambudkar), but when he dumps her right before she’s supposed to give a speech at work, Lucy quickly gets drunk, which leaves her single and unemployed. Drunk and heartbroken, Lucy gets into the wrong car thinking it’s her Lyft, but the driver, Nick (Dacre Montgomery), gives her a ride home while listening to her romance woes. While trying to get her to move on from Max, Lucy’s roommates, Nadine (Phillipa Soo) and Amanda (Molly Gordon), tell her she needs to get rid of the countless mementos that she’s kept from all her past relationships. As she’s going around trying to return the items to her exes, Lucy runs into Nick again, and he shows her the old building that he and his friend (Arturo Castro) have spent the last five years trying to build: the Chloe Hotel. Lucy pins Max’s tie to an unfinished wall at the hotel, which she half-jokingly dubs the Broken Hearts Gallery, but when someone else leaves a heartbreak momento, it gives Lucy an idea to create an art gallery of past heartbreaks. As the gallery begins to take off through social media, Lucy convinces Nick to let her work for him in fixing up the hotel in exchange for use of the second floor. While Nick stresses as money and time runs out for him to open the hotel, Lucy begins to realize that heartbreak is a more universal experience than she realized, and that moving on may be more possible that she thought.
Some of the dialog at the start of the movie is crude, which takes away from this rom-com’s overall genuine humor. While Montgomery steals the show with his character’s charm, Viswanathan’s comedic wit builds her into an endearing lead by the film’s end. Probably not for everyone, The Broken Hearts Gallery meets all the requirements for a sweet and funny romance that will be a hit with fans of the genre.
