“Let’s take it from the top.”

From The High Note.

Grace Davis (Tracee Ellis Ross) is a music superstar that has collected a wide variety of awards and global recognition for her singing career, despite not releasing any new songs in over a decade.  However, Grace’s life is falling apart a bit, as is very evident by the crazy schedule, responsibilities, and hours of her overworked personal assistant, Maggie (Dakota Johnson).  While Grace’s manager, Jack (Ice Cube) is pushing Grace to move her career to Vegas, the music-obsessed Maggie tries to convince both artist and manager that a new album is just what Grace’s career needs.  Even though she hasn’t written anything new, Grace is reluctant to take a Vegas show because it would require her to perform the same show over and over again.  Unable to stay silent while listening a terrible EDM remix of one of Grace’s song, Maggie, who dreams of one day being a music producer, convinces Grace to listen to her mix of the song… which Grace likes.  While Grace’s house manager (June Diane Raphael) tells Maggie to focus on her job, Maggie’s roommate, Katie (Zoë Chao), pushes her to be brave and show Grace more music she’s produced.  A chance encounter with attractive and talented singer-songwriter David (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), allows Maggie a chance to work as his music producer, but it also makes her life even more complicated and busy, especially since her forwardness with her mix put her at odds with Jack.  Trying to balance her work with both Grace and David, stretches Maggie more than she ever expected, but her love of music pushes her to make bolder risks in search of the bigger rewards.

Johnson’s quick wit and humor make her an captivating lead, while Ross somehow manages to find the balance between self-centered and funny.  The music throughout the film is smooth and catchy, and it flows perfectly with both the highs and lows of the storyline.  The High Note is a surprisingly sweetly enjoyable story that will easily strike a chord with viewers.
