“He answered, ‘The one you feed.'”

From The New Mutants.

Waking up in a strange hospital after a terrible event that destroyed her entire reservation, Dani (Blu Hunt) finds out from the hospital’s Dr. Reyes (Alice Braga) that she only survived because she is a mutant whose powers have just developed.  Dr. Reyes also informs Dani that this special hospital is designed to help new mutants learn to control themselves so they can live healthy, normal adult lives.  Dani quickly learns that there are four other patients in the hospital, and she also learns that self-loathing Sam (Charlie Heaton), the rebellious Ilyana (Anya Taylor-Joy), the reserved Rahne (Maisie Williams), and the entitled Roberto (Henry Zaga) have spent years inside the hospital.  Living at the isolated facility that Ilyana insists is a prison, each new mutant is left to struggle with the demons of their past while Dr. Reyes watches constantly.  While Dani waits to discover what her power is, she learns that the others are vastly different in their abilities and family backgrounds, but they all have simularly deadly story of when their powers first manifested.  The longer that she is at the facility, the more Dani realizes that something terrible is going on as each mutant is being plagued with terrible visions that are becoming more and more real.  All the mutants, especially Ilyana, are wary of Dani’s unknown power, but when Dr. Reyes is ordered by her mysterious supervisor to eliminate Dani because of the danger she possesses, the five mutants band together as monsters and demons descend upon the hospital.  Unable to escape individually, these young, volatile mutants come together in the hopes of finding a way to escape together before they are overcome by the unknown forces that seek to destroy them.

While technically a superhero movie set in the X-Men universe, this story definitely leans more towards thriller with the impressive special effects and the intriguing mystery of each character’s power development.  The young cast is solid, unique, and diverse; unfortunately, the timing and development issues of the film take away from their performances.  New Mutants manages to create a thrilling story that will keep viewers engaged, but many viewers will be disappointed that the film wasn’t as good as it could have been.
