“Hey.”

From Burden.

Mike Burden (Garrett Hedlund) has lived his life in Laurens, North Carolina where the Ku Klux Klan has been his only family for most of his life.  While working as a repo man, Mike meets single mother, Judy (Andrea Riseborough) and her young son, Franklin (Taylor Gregory), whose anti-Klan ideas and friendship with the black Clarence (Usher) challenges almost everything Mike thinks he knows about life and humanity.  In 1996, under the direction of local Klan leader Tom (Tom Wilkinson), Mike and his friends have opened the nation’s first Redneck KKK Museum in Laurens.  The opening of the museum causes many in the community to push against the opening, but none quite so much as Reverend Kennedy (Forest Whitaker), who fears that the museum will only incite more violence towards the black community.  As Mike finds himself falling for Judy and forming a strong bond with Franklin, he is torn between her hatred of the Klan to the Klansmen (including Austin Hébert, Joshua Burge, Jeff Pope, and Tess Harper) that he considers family.  However, when a violent outbreak pushes Mike to leave the Klan, Tom and the rest of the Klan take everything from him, leaving Mike, Judy, and Franklin with nowhere to turn.  When Mike’s path crosses with Rev. Kennedy, the young family finds themselves staying with the Kennedy family, much to the dismay of the Reverend’s wife (Crystal R. Fox), son (Dexter Darden), and community.  Struggling with his dark past and his desire to be better for his new family, Mike faces more hardships than he ever expected as he decides between love and hate.

Based on the true story of Burden’s life-changing transformation, this movie is intense, captivating, and inspiring.  Riseborough and Whitaker are very impressive in their roles, but Hedlund is mesmerizing in his portrayal of the conflicted lead.  In order to accurately tell the story, the racism shown is intense, but all that watch will find Burden to be an unforgettable reminder of love’s conquering power over hate.
