From My Spy.
While he was an amazing special forces soldier, JJ (Dave Bautista) has found the switch to CIA spy to be a tough transition; the danger and risks don’t bother him, but the fineness required of a spy sometimes alludes him. When JJ’s boss, David (Ken Jeong), decides to punish him for the overkill on his last mission, JJ is assigned to surveillance with Bobbi (Kristen Schaal), the awkward CIA analyst that’s his biggest fan. As part of the CIA’s attempt to keep bad guys Azar (Ali Hassan) and Marquez (Greg Bryk) from meeting and creating a nuclear bomb, JJ and Bobbi are tasked with watching Marquez’s widowed sister-in-law, Kate (Parisa Fitz-Henley), and niece, Sophie (Chloe Coleman). In Chicago, 9-year-old Sophie is the new girl at school and desperate to fit in, but she is instead constantly tormented by her classmates. Through a stroke of luck and wit, Sophie realizes what JJ and Bobbi are doing, so she confronts and blackmails them. While their agreement was Sophie’s silence in exchange for JJ taking her iceskating, Sophie keeps extending the deal, forcing JJ to spend more time with her and her mom. Not wanting to let David know they were caught by a child, JJ finds himself forming an uneasy almost-friendship with the smart, observant, charming Sophie, and before too long, Sophie gets JJ to train her how to be a spy, much to Bobbi’s annoyance. While initially angry with being saddled on a seemingness pointless mission, JJ quickly finds himself befriending Sophie, maybe falling for Kate, dealing with the neighbors (Devere Rogers and Noah Danby), and trying to find the balance between his job and his heart.
This family movie is both hilarious, heartfelt, and filled with just the right amount of action. Bautista is perfect, both as the tough spy and the new-to-emotion softie, while Coleman is a sweet and sassy rival. A few elements of the movie will make this movie a better fit for families with slightly older children, but overall My Spy is a hilarious must watch!
