“Once they do, there’s no resignin’ the post.”

From Arkansas.

Kyle (Liam Hemsworth) is a low level drug dealer for a man he’s never met, but when he’s promoted and sent to Arkansas, things quickly go from nice and easy to complicated and dangerous.  On his first assignment in Arkansas, Kyle is sent on a delivery with Swin (Clark Duke), a fast-talking, brightly-dressed drug dealer.  Swin is the exact opposite to Kyle’s quiet and steady attitude, but the two are quickly partnered together on a permanent basis.  On their first big delivery, Kyle and Swin are approached by park ranger Pat (John Malkovich), a higher-up member in Frog’s operation, and the two are informed that they will be based out of Pat’s park.  Their cover at the park allows them to traffic drugs across state lines without detection, as long as they follow Frog and Pat’s rules.  While Kyle and Swin are both interested in the mysterious and elusive Frog, Kyle just tries to do his job and advance through the ranks without attracting negative attention to himself.  When Swin breaks one of Pat’s rules and starts dating local girl, Johnna (Eden Brolin), he distractedly makes a mistake that puts both men in big trouble.  As a younger man, Frog (Vince Vaughn) was an entrepreneur that quickly rose through the ranks of the illegal enterprises while working with a wide variety of characters (including Vivica A. Fox, Michael K. Williams, Juston Street, Brad William Henke, and Jeff Chase), until he was finally able to claim the top job for himself, which has made him a ruthless drug dealer.  A series of mistakes places Kyle and Swin on their own, trying to carry on the business without Pat, but despite their best intentions, the two unknowingly become Frog’s enemies and are in for the fight of their lives.

This dark thriller is reminiscent of Wes Anderson’s style of comedy movies, but it also manages to be unique.  Hemsworth and Duke are strong opposites, but manage to bring the story together well through their characters’ differences.  Coupled with a unique soundtrack and settings, Arkansas is an unexpected, enjoyable story that will keep viewers guessing until the very end.
