“Always.”

From Togo.

In January of 1925, Nome, Alaska is a frozen town struggling with a deadly Diphtheria outbreak.  Dogsled owner, Leonhard Seppala (Willem Dafoe) is informed of the sickness outbreak among the town’s children and that there is an antidote arriving by train, but the closest train still leaves the medicine 600 miles away at Nenana.  While the doctor (Richard Dormer) and mayor (Christopher Heyerdahl) push for options to get the medicine to Nome, Seppala warns the townspeople of a fast-approaching storm that spooked his lead dog, Togo, and therefore makes Seppala incredibly wary of the coming storm.  With pressure from his wife, Constance (Julianne Nicholson), and the lack of any other options, Seppala decides to ignore his better judgement and race against the storm to Nenana and back.  As the storm descends on Nome, Seppala prepares Togo and the other dogs on the team for the treacherous mission.  Once the seemingly-untrainable runt of the litter, Togo survived countless challengess to grow into the smart, dedicated, strong-willed dog that Seppala has trained him to be, which quickly becomes evident as the dogs and their master continue to push through the deadly storm.  Back in Nome, with nothing to do but hope and pray, a report is sent to the Associated Press which makes Seppala a national hero and prompts the government to set up a relay system for the medicine.  As Seppala unknowingly races towards the relay man with the medicine (Brandon Oakes), sheer luck allows the men to find each other, but Togo and Seppala’s return journey to Nome will be filled with more danger than anyone could have ever expected.

Beautiful dogs, a captivating true story, and breathtaking scenery come together to create an unforgettable story.  Dafoe does well to keep the many low-dialog scenes full of emotion.  The pacing of the movie helps to keep the movie from being too intense for the entire time, but also helps the viewer to build a relationship with the characters and events.  Completing the story of the 1995 animated film BaltoTogo is an incredible adventure that will have viewers riveted to the screen from start to finish.
