“It’s time now to begin Phase Two.”

From The Maze Runner.

With no memory except his name, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) deposited into a strang world: a glade surrounded on all sides by huge walls.  Thomas is greeted by dozens of teenage boys who seem unfazed by his arrival.  Thomas is partnered up with young Chuck (Blake Cooper) and given a job; the leaders of the group, Alby (Aml Ameen), Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), and Minho (Ki Hong Lee), also give Thomas strict orders to never go out past the walls.  Thomas pushes the others for answers about the world beyond the walls, and he soon learns the terrible truth. A new memory-less boy arrives each month to live in the crude village in the Glade, the walls are part of a giant maze filled with murderous creatures called Grievers, and there’s a elite group of boys that run the maze trying to map an escape.  Thomas’ arrival is unsettling for the Glader, Gally (Will Poulter) and his close friends, and Thomas’ life is even threatened several times, but he pushes to become a runner because he feels some mysterious sense of urgency.  Things really fall apart when the elevator makes an unscheduled delivery of a new glader: a girl named Teresa (Kaya Scodelario) who somehow seems to know Thomas.  Thomas must rise up with the other boys to figure out how to escape the maze with his new friends, learn who Teresa is, remember who he is, and beat whoever it is that put the kids in the maze.

This movie adaptation of the 2009 book of the same name manages to hold the same thrills and chills of the source material.  The story is captivating for both fans of the book series and fans of the sci-fi-fi/dystopian genre.  O’Brien leads a talented cast of young actors on a non-stop adventure filled with action, mystery, and heart.  The Maze Runner is rather intense at times, which will be too much for some viewers, but most will find themselves easily drawn into the sci-fi world.
