From The Red Sea Diving Resort.
In 1979 Ethiopia, the country is being torn apart by rebels, but a tribe of Ethiopian Jews are being relentlessly attacked and murdered. Desperate to escape, Kabede (Michael K. Williams) contacts several Israelis to help all the Jews in his village travel to safety in Jerusalem. Ari (Chris Evans) and Sammy (Alessandro Nivola) arrive to help Kabede and his village escape to a refugee camp in Sudan, but they are arrested before they can move the Jewish refugees out of Sudan. Ari and Sammy are released through the help of Walton (Greg Kinnear) from the American Embassy and are called back to Israel, but they leave Kabede to help more Ethiopian Jews escape to the refugee camp in their absence. Ari’s boss (Ben Kingsley) at Mossad threatens to pull him from the mission, but Ari comes up with a plan on how to safely bring the refugees from Sudan to Israel; Ari convinces all those above him that traveling by boat on the Red Sea is the easiest and most practical way to rescue the refugees. Getting the refugees to safety will also include reopening a failed Sudanese seaside hotel: the Red Sea Diving Resort. Ari begins to assemble a team to run and defend the fake resort including Sammy, Rachel (Haley Bennett), Jake (Michiel Huisman), and Max (Alex Hassell). Under the watchful eyes of the local, corrupt military commander (Chris Chalk), Ari and the others struggle to find the safe balance between smuggling Ethiopian Jews to Israel while also maintaining the cover of running a bustling hotel.
This unbelievable true thriller is captivating from start to finish. Evans leads a talented cast through both action and drama, which really allows viewers to feel the heartbreaking danger of the story. The violence of certain situations shown will be too intense for some viewers, but The Red Sea Diving Resort is truly an unforgettable and inspiring movie for fans of movies inspired by lesser-know times in history.
