“Was gonna say, it kinda feels, um… like home.”

From Lady and the Tramp.

A gift from Jim Dear (Thomas Mann) to Darling (Kiersey Clemons), Lady (voiced by Tessa Thompson) the cocker spaniel has become very accustomed to her life as a pampered pet in turn-of-the-century America.  Both of her human owners are kind, gentle, and attentive… that is, until Lady learns that they are expecting a baby.  The dogs next door, Trusty (voiced by Sam Elliott) and Jock (voiced by Ashley Jensen), inform Lady that life will change with the arrival of the baby, but Lady isn’t too scared until a stray dog named Tramp (voiced by Justin Theroux) warns her how terrible life will be after the baby arrives.  While Lady tries to ignore Tramp’s warning, the baby’s arrival does bring some changes to her home, mainly the arrival of Darling’s busybody, cat-loving Aunt Sarah (Yvette Nicole Brown).  When Aunt Sarah is left to watch Lady and the house, things go from bad to worse almost instantly as Lady finds herself muzzled and lost in the city.  Tramp, always on the run from the dog catcher (Adrian Martinez), finds Lady, helps her escape her muzzle, and agrees to help her get home, even though he doesn’t see the point of return gin to owners that he’s sure will one day abandon her.  While Lady and Tramp strongly disagree on the idea of being pets and human kindness, the two also finds themselves drawn closer as their incredible journey that brings them to a fancy restaurant, a pound filled with strays (including Janelle Monáe and Benedict Wong), and face-to-face with a deadly rat.

This live action remake of the 1955 classic is sweet, funny, and captivating.  The computer animation is rather impressive overall, and when coupled with a talented cast, is a fun adventure.  Almost all the memorable elements from the original are repeated, but this new adaptation does miss out on some of the magic of the original.  Lady and the Tramp is the perfect choice for family movie night for fans old and new.
