From Dark Waters.
Newly-partnered corporate lawyer, Rob Bilott (Mark Ruffalo) is extremely surprised when Wilbur (Bill Camp), a farmer and acquaintance of Rob’s grandmother (Marcia Dangerfield), arrives at his office begging him to sue the company DuPont for poisoning his cattle. While Rob does not believe Wilbur’s claims or that he would even be the right lawyer for the job, curiosity wins out and Rob travels to Parkersburg, West Virginia to see what Wilbur is talking about. When Rob arrives, he finds almost two hundred dead cattle and a malignant farm next to the newly-constructed DuPont landfill; positive that there are some truths to Wilbur’s claims, Rob asks his boss (Tim Robbins) for permission to take on the case even though DuPont’s Phil Donnelly (Victor Garber) has been a friend and supporter of the firm for years… much to the disapproval of fellow partners (including William Jackson Harper). With the support of his wife, Sarah (Anne Hathaway), Rob sues the major American company for discovery and they comply with decades of over-information, but Rob’s dedication to solving the mystery of both Wilbur’s farm and the issues facing Parkersburg leads him to find a mysterious and repeatedly-mentioned chemical simply called C8. Rob is still struggling through DuPont’s legal red tape and records to little avail, but the discovery of PFOA, C8’s real chemical make up, is groundbreaking for the case. With the discovery of PFOA, Rob is able to build a case against DuPont by showing that the company has long since known the dangers that the chemical poses to human health and nature. Partnering with defense lawyer Harry (Bill Pullman), Rob moves forward in the fight against DuPont, but he quickly becomes aware of DuPont’s reach, power, and desire to silence him.
Inspired by real events and the news article that brought it to nationwide attention, this thriller is equally captivating and terrifying. Ruffalo’s dedication easily transfers to his character which provides a steadying factor to the years-spanning story. An interesting look into a dark, modern coverup, Dark Waters is a must watch that highlights the struggle between technology and financial gain.
