“It’s only the plane.”

From The Impossible.

Christmas 2004 was supposed to be the perfect family vacation in paradise as the unsuspecting Bennett family arrived at their luxury resort in Thailand.  As Henry (Ewan McGregor) and Maria (Naomi Watts) struggle to keep their excited sons Lucas (Tom Holland), Thomas (Samuel Joslin), and Simon (Oaklee Pendergast) from getting sunburnt or opening their Christmas presents early, they are unaware how much their lives are about to change forever.  On December 26th, a giant tsunami crashes in from the ocean and washes the pool-side family and resort away.  Lucas and Maria are able to find each other despite being dangerously wounded in a secondary wave, but except for a small terrified boy (Johan Sundberg) that they rescue, the can find no one else from the resort. Later, locals find Maria and Lucas and take her to a local hospital that has also been set up as a relief camp.  As Maria’s health grows more dangerous, Lucas is mistakenly separated from her and is left alone in the disaster relief camp.  When the wave hit, Henry managed to keep hold of Simon and Thomas and find the way back to the resort, but he is still desperate to find his wife and oldest son.  In an effort to reunite the family, he puts the boys on a truck headed to the safety of a mountain camp, while he continues to search the wreckage of the resort.  Unable to find any hint of them at the resort, Henry joins a group of other survivors checking hospitals for missing loved ones.  As desperation sets in for each member of the family, it will take a miracle to unite them all again.

Based on one family’s real-life survival of the disaster, this movie displays the vast devastation that shattered life for countless families, as well as the strength of the human spirit through tragedy.  The movie is extremely intense and will be too much for sensitive  viewers, but McGregor, Watts, and Holland really shine as they bring the incredible story to life.  The Impossible is a mesmerizing story that is unforgettable and definitely worth the watch.
