“We’re going home.”

From Early Man.

For a cave man, Dug (Eddie Redmayne) is fairly average; he happily lives in his village filled with his oddball friends and pet pig Hognob (Nick Park), but his life is pretty boring overall.  Dug and his friends live their peaceful Stone Age lives under the village chief, Bobnar (Timothy Spall) hunting rabbits and resisting advancing technologies.  However, when their beautiful valley is attacked by the leader of the Bronze Age, Lord Nooth (Tom Hiddleston), and Dug and his friends are forced to hide in the badlands.   Not wanting to give up his home without a fight, Dug tries to attack, but instead finds himself transported back to Nooth’s bronze kingdom.  Through a crazy series of events, Dug challenges Nooth to a game of soccer with Dug’s valley as the prize for the winner.  Despite the warnings of his Queen (Miriam Margoyles), Nooth agrees, and Dug heads home to prepare his friends for the game.  Unfortunately, even though Dug tries desperately to turn his neighbors (Richard Ayoade, Simon Greenall, Selina Griffiths, Johnny Vegas, Rich Webber, Mark Williams, and Gina Yashere) into a successful bunch of soccer players, they are extremely uncoordinated and easily distracted.  Things look incredibly bleak for Dug and his team until he makes a friend with a Bronze Age girl named Goona (Maisie Williams) who agrees to help them train in exchange for a spot on the team.  As the day of the big game draws closer, Nooth tries to use a variety of tricks, but through it all, Dug discovers the power his underdog team really possesses.

This stop-motion animated film is captivating to watch, and since it is from the same studio that created Wallace and Gromit, it definitely holds a certain nostalgic appeal for many viewers.  The cast is hilarious, unique, and captivating as they lend their voices to the wide array of characters, especially Redmayne and Hiddleston.  The humor is clean, but also surprisingly funny for older viewers, as well.  Early Man takes the ideas about life long ago and completely flips it around for a fun adventure.
