From The Biggest Little Farm.
In 2010, wildlife videographer John Chester (as himself) and his wife, personal chef Molly (as herself) made a promise to their dog, Todd, to never abandon him. So when Todd’s barking make their apartment living in Santa Monica impossible, they finally set in motion Molly’s dream to own a farm. The couple raised enough money to purchase the abandoned Apricot Lane Farms. While the farm featured over 200 acres, the soil was dry, dead, and unsuitable to grow or hold any living things. However, Molly was not to be deterred, so they brought in Alan York (as himself), a natural farming specialist to help them bring the land back to life in a way that would benefit plants, animals, and people. After changing some damaged equipment and set-ups, the land slowly began to produce again. Within a few years, the farm is able to produce eggs, plants, and a small number of livestock, but John and Molly struggle to find the balance between weather, wildlife, and natural solutions. The work is definitely near impossible at times, but surprises like an exceptionally large pig pregnancy to the unusual friendship between various animals on the farm to a gentle guard dog make the work bearable. Continuous issues with snails, gophers, and coyotes that destroy both plant and animal life constantly push Molly and John to think outside the box and look to nature for answers. By the seventh year, they are able to create a lush paradise for plants and animals that focuses on balance and helping nature do its thing.
This documentary showcases an unbelievable transformation of the land from practically desert to lush paradise. This film forces the viewer to focus on being creative with problem solving while highlighting the dedication of the Chesters to cultivate a way of farm life that is almost unheard of in the world today. The Biggest Little Farm is a captivating and inspiring documentary that is impossible to forget.
