From I Still Believe.
When Jeremy Camp (KJ Apa) left his parents (Gary Sinise and Shania Twain) and younger brothers Nicolas Bechtel and Reuben Dodd) in Indiana to attend Calvary Chapel Bible College in 1999, he never expected it to change his life so much. After sneaking into a welcome concert on campus, Jeremy was able to meet Jean-Luc (Nathan Parsons) who befriended the freshman and let him work behind stage. While working in the wings, Jeremy sees a young woman worshipping and she captivated his attention. After the show, Jeremy finds her and she tells him that her name is Melissa (Britt Robertson). Melissa invites Jeremy to a party on the beach where he is able to ask her on a date; despite the protests from her sister (Melissa Roxburgh) about losing focus, Melissa and Jeremy begin dating. While their relationship is good, it is complicated by Jean-Luc liking Melissa, so as Christmas break approaches, Jeremy goes home uncertain of their future. During break, Jean-Luc calls Jeremy to let him know that Melissa is in the hospital, and Jeremy races back to California to be with her and learns that Melissa has been diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. Unable to escape the feeling that they are supposed to be together, Jeremy proposes, regardless of her diagnosis. What follows is several months of treatments, doctors, and lots of prayer, all while Jeremy’s career as a musician begins to take off. Through all the highs and lows of their relationship and eventual marriage, Jeremy is constantly amazed by Melissa’s faith while his own faith begins to falter, as he fights to never give up hope.
Inspired by the real-life story of Jeremy and his wife, this movie is full of both the heart-lifting and heart-crushing moments. Apa and Robertson are magnetic together on screen, which keeps the film from coming off as sappy or fake. Fans of Camp’s music will enjoy the music woven throughout the film, especially some of Camp’s most popular songs. This love story is very sad at times, but I Still Believe is, overall, an incredibly inspiring movie.
