“It’s *freaking* great.”

From The Hunt.

When Crystal (Betty Gilpin) and eleven other strangers (including Emma Roberts, Sturgill Simpson, Wayne Duvall, Christopher Berry, Sylvia Grace Crim, Kate Nowlin, and Jason Kirkpatrick) wake up in a field with a crate of weapons located in the center, the kidnapped individuals are unsure what is happening until they realize that they are being hunted.  Three of the hunted (Justin Hartley, Ike Barinholtz, and Ethan Suplee) believe they’ve been brought to a place known as the Manor where some of America’s wealthy elite hunt common people for sport.  Several others don’t believe the viral stories that have circled the web about the Manor, however, as they come in contact with the people who are hunting them (including Amy Madigan, Reed Birney, Glenn Howerton, Dean J. West, Teri Wyble, Usman Ally, and Steve Coulter) and see the extent of their reach, it becomes obvious that the online conspiracy theories are true.  Pitted against the wealthy, Crystal and the others desperately fight to escape the terrifying plans that Manor leader, Athena (Hilary Swank) has set into motion.  Every step the hunted take to put distance between themselves and their hunters seems to be filled with tricks and traps all meant to ensure that the hunted are all killed.  As the number of people left alive dwindles on both sides, Crystal is determined to find Athena and bring the hunt to and end once and for all.

This bloodbath thriller was highly protested so that the theatrical release was pushed back several months, but fans of the genre will consider it well worth the wait.  The violence and gore are over-the-top and almost non-stop, but there are enough satirical points and plot twists to build the story up in other areas, as well.  Gilpin leads her half of the cast as a quiet, but focused rebel while Swank leads her half of characters as the love-to-hate villain.  Without a doubt, The Hunt is not a movie for everyone, but viewers that aren’t squeamish will enjoy this thriller satire that never slows down.
