“Cheer up!”

From Sonic the Hedgehog.

As a child, Sonic the Hedgehog ignored the warnings of his guardian, Longclaw (Donna Jay Fulks), and frequently used his gift of super speed.  However, the hedgehog’s power attracts the attention of evil people, so Longclaw gives Sonic a bag of magical transportation rings and sends him to safety on a distant planet.  Ten years later, Sonic (Ben Schwartz) has found himself on the planet Earth in the small town of Green Hills, Montana.  He enjoys watching the local residents, especially the sheriff Tom (James Marsden) and his wife Maddie (Tika Sumpter).  Tom feels like he is drowning in boredom in Green Hills, so he applies to be a police office in San Francisco for a chance to help people with life and death situations.  When his wife goes to check out San Francisco apartments and visit her sister (Natasha Rothwell), Tom stays home to finish packing and prepare his deputy, Wade (Adam Pally), to protect Green Hills alone.  However, it is a far from quiet departure for Tom when he finds Sonic hiding in his garage.  After getting upset and creating a major power outage, Sonic has become the target of the government’s top and weirdest scientist, Dr. Robotik (Jim Carrey) and his countless robots and henchmen (led by Lee Majdoub).  An accident separated sonic from his life-saving rings, so Tom agrees to help him get to the rings before Robotnik can capture the hedgehog.  Along the way to the rings, Sonic asks Tom to help him complete his Earth bucket list, and both Tom and Sonic find more adventure, danger, and fun than they ever could have imagined.

A new introduction to the classic video game franchise, this movie is also a satisfying adventure for longtime fans of the character.  Schwartz easily provides Sonic’s fun attitude through his almost non-stop voice acting and Marsden brings a quick wit to balance out his digital costar.  The fun story pairs well with the amazing special effects to make Sonic the Hedgehog a fun adventure the entire family will enjoy.
