From The Gentlemen.
Michael Pearson (Matthew McConaughey) has made an empire for himself in England growing and selling marijuana; for years he has created a solid, protected, and wildly productive business. However, now Michael and his wife (Michelle Dockery) are looking to retire, so he shows the rich Matthew (Jeremy Strong) a piece of the business that is for sale and lays down a price tag of $400 million. Things are complicated when a private detective, Fletcher (Hugh Grant), approaches Michael’s top guy, Ray (Charlie Hunnam), threatening to go public with a empire-crumbling story to a local newspaper owner (Eddie Marsan) if they don’t pay his blackmail. Further complicating everything, when there is a robbery at one of the farms by a group of nobodies led by Coach (Colin Farrell), it raises serious questions about the security of the business and the danger of a leak. As Ray and Michael work towards the selling of the business, they also face off against a tough wannabe moving his way up through the Chinese gangs and away from his boss (Tom Wu), Dry Eye (Henry Golding), who has his sights set solely on Michael’s weed, profit, and empire. As everything around them seems to be going wrong, Michael and Ray fight against the forces trying to take everything from them, while also struggling to help those that have helped the business survive this long.
This action comedy is full of the perfect blend of violence, humor, and twists. The story is a bit slow at first and almost completely different in tone from the rest of the film, but once all the characters have been introduced, the story takes off. McConaughey and Hunnam bring the smooth class that is needed to balance out the street attitude that surrounds them. When coupled with the quick dialog, the accents can be thick at times, but the constantly developing story is a must-watch for fans of mobster movies. The Gentlemen is a unique, captivating, and fun ride that viewers will not soon to forget.
