From Like a Boss.
Best friends for over twenty years, Mel (Rose Byrne) and Mia (Tiffany Haddish) have turned their friendship into the business model for their cosmetics company: Mia & Mel. Mia handles the big ideas for the products and Mel handles the finances and behind-the-scenes aspects of running their new storefront with the help of their two employees (Jennifer Coolidge and Billy Porter). While the friends’ online store has done very well, the physical store has left the women in serious debt. In fact, their online success has done so well that it has attracted the attention of cosmetic powerhouse Claire Luna (Salma Hayek) who offers to pay of Mel and Mia’s debt for a 49% share in their company. Mia is hesitant to take Claire’s deal, but desperate to keep their business afloat, Mel convinces Mia to agree. Along with trying to please Claire, Mel and Mia also have to deal with Claire’s snarky personal assistant (Karan Soni) and another small cosmetic company (run by Ryan Hansen and Jimmy O. Yang) fighting to be Claire’s new featured brand. While their friends (Ari Graynor, Natasha Rothwell, and Jessica St. Clair) try to keep the lifelong friends from fighting, Mia and Mel struggle to find the balance between Claire’s demands and the inner beauty brand that they’ve spent years developing, the best friends also have to deal with their quickly crumbling friendship. The closer they get to Claire’s product launch party, the farther Mia and Mel seem to push away from each other.
The two leads are total opposites in their comedic style with Haddish taking the in-your-face approach that has become her brand, with Bryne providing the right amount of awkwardness that perfectly balances out Haddish. The movie’s timing is a bit clunky at points, making it seem like a slightly-longer running time would have been the perfect solution. Sexual humor is the driving force behind this comedy, but some genuinely funny moments make Like a Boss the perfect movie for a girl’s night out.
