From Underwater.
Working for Tian Industries miles under the surface of the ocean, structural engineer, Norah (Kristen Stewart), has her entire world thrown into turmoil when the Kepler Station suffers an unknown accident that leaves most of the station destroyed. As Norah struggles to reach the escape pods, she finds other survivors, the terrified Rodrigo (Mamoudou Athie) and her jokester friend, Paul (T.J. Miller). However, when they make it to the pods, they find Captain Lucien (Vincent Cassel) and a room full of used pods. Norah, the Captain, and the others head to the command room where they find engineer Smith (John Gallagher Jr.) and his girlfriend, Emily (Jessica Henwick) trying to make contact with the surface. With no way to escape and a rapidly crumbling station, the six survivors are left with no choice but to travel down to the ocean floor and make the over 1-mile hike across the Mariana Trench to the Roebuck Drilling Station. However, their already life-threatening journey is made even more dangerous when they realize that an unknown thing is hunting them. As everything seems to go wrong, Norah leads the survivors on a desperate attempt to reach the drilling station before the unknown creatures overtake them.
This underwater thriller is action-packed from start to finish. Stewart leads a small, but talented cast in an edge-of-your-seat monster/disaster movie mash-up that leaves nothing to be desired. Left in complete almost darkness, one major terror comes from the limited visibility and the knowledge that something terrible is out there. The pacing is not overwhelmed with useless information, rather the viewer learns bits and pieces about the characters as the movie progresses, making them more relatable and the dangerous thrills the real star of the movie. Underwater is a captivating movie filled with impressive camerawork and special effects coupled with immersive sets and lots of twists scattered throughout that is an entertaining thriller.
