“Promise you won’t.”

From Judy.

After landing the role of a lifetime in the Wizard of Oz as a teenager, Judy Garland (Darci Shaw) became the center of America‘s attention.  However, life was not happy for the young actress as a strict production schedule and an even stricter studio owner (Richard Cordery) kept Judy on track and behaved with pills and threats.  Her childhood in Hollywood pushed Judy (Renée Zellweger) into a tumultuous adulthood filled with failed marriages, alcohol, and pills.  Her life choices made it difficult for Judy to provide for her children (Bella Ramsey and Lewin Lloyd), especially while in the middle of a custody battle was her most recent ex-husband (Rufus Sewell).  With no money and no one willing to hire her in America, Judy leaves her children with their father and takes a show in London, all in the effort  of earning enough money to be able to raise her kids.  When she arrives in London, Judy is given a local manager (Jessie Buckley) and a band leader (Royce Pierreson) to help prepare her for the shows.  Judy is plagued with a constant terror of failure which makes her incredibly difficult to work and perform with.  One of the few people able to help Judy focus is the young Mickey (Finn Wittrock) who she met at a party; Mickey often has grand ideals for success for both Judy and himself, and basking in his attention, she follows blindly while trying to make her London show a success.

Offering an interesting look at one of Hollywood’s most iconic performers, this movie takes the truth of Garland’s life and presents it in a way that is heartbreaking, while real and connective.  Zellweger embodies Garland both on and off the stage, leaving audiences with a chilling and captivating look how a childhood stolen by Hollywood led to a life stolen of its potential.  While not a action-packed movie, it is filled with a roller coaster of emotion as Garland struggles to find acceptance in light of her constant fear of failure.  Judy is a powerful movie that will touch viewers, especially those that were fans of Garland’s work.
