“I thought we already agreed on that.”

From Jumanji: The Next Level.

Since they survived being pulled into the video game Jumanji, Spencer (Alex Wolff), Martha (Morgan Turner), Bethany (Madison Iseman), and Fridge (Ser’Darius Blain) have drifted apart.  While Christmas has the friends excited to spend time together, Spencer really struggles with coming home to share his unheroic, mundane life with Grandpa Eddie (Danny DeVito) who’s staying with them after hip surgery.  Overwhelmed with ordinary, Spencer decides to repair the destroyed Jumanji game in an effort to feel like a hero again; so while Grandpa Eddie is upstairs arguing with his former friend and business partner, Milo (Danny Glover), Spencer is downstairs trying to make Jumanji functional.  When he misses their schedule meet-up, Spencer’s friends go to his house looking for him and realize he’s gone back into the game.  Martha, Fridge, and Bethany agree to go back in to rescue Spencer but things go horribly wrong because the console is so damaged.  While Martha is still the Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan) character, Fridge is now Prof. Oberon (Jack Black), Eddie is Dr. Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), and Milo has become “Mouse” Finbar (Kevin Hart).  Still stuck outside the game, Bethany seeks help from Jumanji-survivor Alex (Colin Hanks) to help her get in the game and help their friends.  While Fridge and Martha struggle to keep Milo and Eddie focused and alive, they discover that the crystal that brings life to Jumanji has been stolen by a warlord (Rory McCann) and that the nervous pickpocket, Ming (Awkwafina) is Spencer’s new character.  Bethany and Alex finally get back into the game with Alex as his original character (Nick Jonas) and Bethany, unfortunately as a horse; the friends are all able to find each other and must try to beat this next level before it’s too late.

Building off the characters from the 2017 sequel, this third Jumanji offers lots of action, laughter, and adventure.  Gillan, Johnson, Hart, and Black brilliantly act out their “new” characters throughout the movie, providing truly hilarious character developments.  The action violence is fairly constant, but almost completely bloodless which might make it too intense for only the youngest of viewers.  Jumanji: The Next Level is a hilarious movie that lives up to its predecessors and is a must-see for fans of the series.
