“Well, I have my opinion, but I have a feeling you’ll follow your heart.”

From Knives Out.

When mystery writer Harlon Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead the morning after his 80th birthday party, the police (Lakeith Stanfield and Noah Segan) believes that all the evidence points to suicide.  However, before they officially close the case, a private detective, Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is hired to reexamine the evidence.  As Blanc and the officers re-interview the family and staff, it quickly becomes evident to Blanc that there is no shortage of lies and suspects.  Blanc observes and interviews Harlon’s family including mother (K Callan), daughter Linda (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her husband (Don Johnson), son Walt (Michael Shannon) and his wife (Riki Lindhome), widowed daughter-in-law Joni (Toni Collette), granddaughter Meg (Katherine Langford), and grandsons Jacob (Jaeden Lieberher) and Ransom (Chris Evans).  After interviewing the family and staff (including M. Emmet Walsh and Edi Patterson), Blanc interviews Harlon’s nurse, Marta (Ana de Armas), and enlists her help in investigating the case because she cannot tell a lie without throwing up.  While he tries to sort through all the varying accounts of the events of Harlon’s last night alive, Blanc discovers that everyone is trying to keep their many arguments with Harlon and each other from the detective.  As the police see Harlon’s disagreements and last-minute financial changes as proof that he committed suicide, Blanc begins to see through the self-defending and blame-pushing of the family to the truth that is buried underneath it all.  With the lawyer (Frank Oz) and  the reading of Harlon’s will looming, Blanc must solve the mystery surrounding Harlon’s death while dealing with interference from every side.

This mystery is fun and full of mysterious twists that keep viewers invested in the story from start to surprising finish.  All of the characters are unique and when led by Craig as the southern-drawl detective their individuality is allowed to shine in the constantly developing mystery.  Knives Out is reminiscent of Agatha Christie mysteries where the death is just the kick-off and telling the witness from the murderer is where the real challenge begins.
