“It’s Christmas!”

From Last Christmas.

Kate (Emilia Clarke) who was once full of joy and life now finds herself surviving only through a uncountable number of different pubs, friends’ couches, failed auditions, and one night stands.  Her life is falling apart in almost every way, because since a serious health scare a year ago, she’s had trouble connecting with her immigrant parents (Emma Thompson and Boris Isakovic), her has-it-all-together sister (Lydia Leonard), or her job at a year round Christmas shop with a boss she calls Santa (Michelle Yeoh).  Kate seems to feel that the only continuously good thing in life is George Michael and his music, but then one day she meets the mysterious and charming Tom (Henry Golding) and Kate’s life is turned upside down.  While Kate is sarcastic and pessimistic, Tom is a gentleman that puts others first and never seems tired of talking to Kate, so she eventually finds herself falling for the man who pushes her to be a better person.  As Christmas draws near, Kate finds herself spending time at the homeless shelter where Tom volunteers at night, and she finds herself connecting with the daytime staff and the homeless residents with genuine concern for others that she hasn’t felt in months. The closer that Kate gets to Tom, the more she realizes that his encouragement to try to focus on those closest to her might just be the thing she needs to pull her life back together.

This holiday romantic comedy is sweet and funny with a twist that is reminiscent of some other classic Christmas movies.  The George Michael-led soundtrack provides a fun background to the fantastical story, while Clark and Golding create the perfect pairing of opposites attract.  While some may guess the ending, it will be a surprise for most viewers and interesting to watch develop for all.  Last Christmas is a captivating, endearing movie that will resonate with viewers long after the credits roll.
