“You have the rest of your life to figure it out.”

From Midway.

Despite the warnings of naval intelligence officer Layton (Patrick Wilson), the American forces are completely unprepared for Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941.   As America scrambles to discover and prepare for Japan’s next move, new Navy Commander Nimitz (Woody Harrelson) tasks Layton with encoding the Japanese messages that seem to indicate that they are planning another attack.  On the USS Enterprise, Commander Halsey (Dennis Quaid) commands a squad of torpedo bombers (led by Darren Criss) and dive bombers (including Luke Evans, Keean Johnson, Nick Jonas, and Jake Manley).  One of the biggest pushers for action against the Japanese is bomber XO, Dick Best (Ed Skrein), who is always willing to risk his safety for the success of his mission and the safety of America; despite his disregard for his safety, Best is supported by his wife (Mandy Moore) at home and best friend and fellow pilot (Luke Kleintank), but he is often at odds with the officers above him.  As the Japanese forces (led by Tadanobu Asano and Etushi Toyokawa) prepare an attack on America’s Midway base, Layton’s top decoder (Brennan Brown) cracks the code that allows America to piece together the basic plans for attack.  However, Layton faces a great challenge in convincing the Navy to go against their more reliable intel and move their last few ships in the Pacific towards Midway.  Best and all his fellow bombers also face a seemingly impossible task as they prepare to take on the full force of the Japanese Navy with only what survived the Pearl Harbor attack.

Based on the true people and events that took place between the attack on Pearl Harbor and WWII’s Battle of Midway in June 1942.  The movie is inspiring, but intense as it tells the amazing story of heroism and sacrifice which might make it difficult for younger or sensitive viewers, even though there is not an abundance of gore.  Filled with an impressive, all star cast, Midway is a moving and inspiring tale of one of the most pivotal battles in the Pacific during World War II.
