From Poms.
Martha (Diane Keaton) leaves her life and cancer diagnosis behind to move to Sun Springs Retirement Community to enjoy some peace and quiet before she dies. She’s told by Sun Springs’ president, Vicki (Celia Weston) that she’ll have to join a club as part of the community’s requirements, but when she can’t find a group she likes, she convinces her wild neighbor Sheryl (Jacki Weaver) to create a cheerleading club. The women are told that they’ll need at least eight members, so Martha and Sheryl hold auditions where they add the necessary six (Ginny MacCoil, Carol Sutton, Phyllis Somerville, Patricia French, Pam Grier, and Rhea Perlman) to the group. While the group tries to get their act together, an accident at a pep rally goes viral in a bad way when a high school cheerleader Chloe (Alisha Boe) records the messy performance. The club is cancelled by Vicki and the head of security (Bruce McGill), but the women decide that they’re not done yet. So with a little musical help from Sheryl’s grandson (Charlie Tahan) and a little blackmail to get Chloe to be their coach, the women jump right back into practice. As Martha keeps her progressing illness under wraps, she and the others must find a way to keep their practices secret from all the various groups that want to stop them if they want to have any shot at winning a fast-approaching cheer competition.
More than just a movie about senior citizen cheerleaders, it is instead a funny look at growing old, but not useless. While the dialog will probably be a bit too crass at times for some viewers, the film is sweet and enjoyable overall. Keaton and Weaver are the polar opposites that perfectly balance the other’s character out on screen. The irony of retirement community living often offers the most hilarious humor of the film, but the humor just builds from there. Filled lots of subtle and unexpected humor, Poms is the perfect movie for a lazy movie night.
