From Ad Astra.
Sergeant Major Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) is an astronaut with a legacy. In the not-so-distant future where space travel has become a much larger part of life on earth while scientific advances have led to bases on the Moon and several other planets in our solar system. After a power surge from space sends all the earth and into chaos Roy is tasked with a mission to travel to the Mars base to send a secure message to Neptune, which is the last known position of the decades-old Lima Project. While the project initially looked promising, the mission has lost contact and all the crew including Roy’s father, Clifford (Tommy Lee Jones), have been presumed dead. In a classified briefing Roy is told that the solar flares are coming from Neptune, they are far from being finished, and that the high levels of the government believe that Roy’s father is alive. Roy sets off with his assigned contact (Donald Sutherland) on their covert mission where the fate of the world lies in their hands. Unsure of what he will find when he gets there or if he’ll find anything at all, the usually calm and collected Roy begins to question both his father’s legacy and the motives of the organization he has given his life to. While nothing seems to go right for Roy it seems that his supervisors are pushing for the end of his involvement in the mission, so he takes it on himself to risk everything, find his father, and stop the solar flares… even if it will cost him everything.
While, visually stunning this sci-fi movie is not heavy on the action, and instead comes across almost as a movie-length monologue. Some of the scenes and situations are captivating, but the majority of the drama is low key. The film is visually stunning and offers some thought provoking moments, while Pitt does well solo through the main portion of the film. Ad Astra is a slow, but interesting look at the possibilities of the future.
