“We made it.”

From The Peanut Butter Falcon.

Zak (Zack Gottsagen) is desperate to escape the nursing home where he’s been assigned to live and feels that he shouldn’t be a prisoner just because he has Down syndrome.  Despite his good relationship with the home’s social worker, Eleanor (Dakota Johnson), Zak is not allowed to leave, so his elderly roommate (Bruce Dern) helps Zak escape out the window in the middle of the night so he can find his way to a wrestling school run by his favorite wrestler (Thomas Haden Church).  Tyler (Shia LaBeouf) is a fisherman that often finds himself on the wrong side of the law, mainly because he is still overwhelmed with guilt over the death his brother (Jon Bernthal).  After taking revenge on some competition (John Hawkes and Yelawolf), Tyler heads off for the safety of Florida.  When Zak unknowingly stows away on Tyler’s boat, the two form an unlikely friendship as Tyler promises to help Zak get to the wrestling school and Zak slowly helps Tyler enjoy life again.  So as Eleanor searches for Zak and Tyler’s past begins to catch up with him, the two young men find themselves on an adventure that will change both their lives forever.

The true beauty of this movie comes from the use of the modern, realistic elements to further enhance the fantastical, adventure story as a whole.  LaBeouf and Gottsagen play polar opposites, but each brings his character to life perfectly, especially when sharing the screen; however, the strength of their on-screen friendship really shines when Johnson joins them with unexpected quick wit and humor.  The southern accents of certain cast members can be quite thick at times, which can make it difficult to catch everything when a character speaks in a fast or mumbled voice.  Filled with gorgeous scenery, catchy music, a talented cast, and an endearingly sweet story line, The Peanut Butter Falcon is the perfect movie for anyone looking to celebrate the unexpected power of friendship.
