From Ready or Not.
As Grace (Samara Weaving) prepares to marry Alex (Mark O’Brien), she feels like the luckiest girl in the world; their beautiful wedding is being held at Alex’s childhood home, the Le Domas family mansion. While Grace is nervous about meeting Alex’s family for the first time, she is also excited to finally have a family. After the ceremony, Alex informs Grace that one must-do tradition in the Le Domas family is a game night whenever someone new joins the family, so Grace agrees to play a quick game. When she arrives downstairs to play, Grace finds that Alex’s parents (Henry Czerny and Andie MacDowell), reluctant brother (Adam Brody), sister-in-law (Elyse Levesque), spacey sister (Melanie Scrofano), brother-in-law (Kristian Bruun), and mean aunt (Nicky Guadagni) will all be playing with Alex and Grace. Grace draws the card for hide and seek, and is told she must stay hidden until dawn to win before she heads off to hide while the family butler (John Ralston) and maids (Daniela Barbosa, Hanneke Talbot, and Celine Tsai) make the final preparations as the rest of the family counts. However, once the game begins Grace quickly learns that everyone, with the exception of her husband, is searching for her to kill her. Alex manages to find her and explains that his family believes that not killing Grace will cause a deadly curse to claim the family, so when Alex heads off to unlock the doors so Grace can get out, Grace has to try to sneak her way through the house without being found in a terror-filled wedding night.
While marketed as a horror movie, this gory dark comedy is distinctively different from the standard scary movie. The mystery surrounding the family curse winds itself into each character’s motivation and eventually into the viewer’s questioning mind, as well. Weaving is a strong lead, developing from oblivious bride to fighting heroine as the film progresses. While the storyline will be unappealing to some, Ready or Not is an unexpectedly enjoyable dark comedy.
