From Overcomer.
John Harrison (Alex Kendrick) has a great life; he’s the coach of the basketball team at a large Christian school, he has a supportive wife, Amy (Shari Wiedmann), and a great relationship with his two sons (oldest played by Jack Sterner). However, when the local steel plant closes, life is turned upside down for John, the school, and the entire town. Now, in what what was supposed to be his team’s perfect season, John finds himself with a pay cut, a dwindling number of players, and on top of everything else, the principal (Priscilla Shirer) has assigned him to coach the cross country team. John’s low expectations for cross country are further lowered when the asthmatic Hannah (Aryn Wright-Thompson) shows up to join he team. The sophomore has lived with her grandmother (Denise Armstrong) since the death of her parents, but Hannah struggles to do well in anything other than running and stealing, so she begins running as the sole team member for the school. With no experience, John has no one to turn to for help coaching Hannah until a hospital visitation mix-up brings the blind former runner, Thomas (Cameron Arnett) into his life. Both Hannah and John struggle through a difficult and unexpected year, but the more Thomas pushes John, both as a Christian and a coach, unexpected discoveries surface that will change everything in ways that none of them ever could have expected.
This sixth highly-inspirational movie by the Kendrick brothers is full of laughter, excitement, emotion, and heart. Besides being an extremely well-written story with genuine actors, it is an impressive visual look into one of America’s less-popular sports. While it is undeniably a Christian movie, it is never pushy or preachy, but it does highlight the often unexpected power of faith. Overcomer is a captivating and inspiring movie for viewers of all ages, regardless of religion.
