From Blinded by the Light.
In 1987, Javed (Viveik Kalra) is living in the small town of Luton, England with his parents (Kulvinder Ghir and Meera Ganatra), sisters (Tara Divina and Nikita Mehta), and an overwhelming sense that’s he’s stuck in a dead end life. He loves to write lyrics for his best friend, Matt’s (Dean-Charles Chapman) band and poems for himself, but when his father is laid-off, Javed’s family all jumps in to help bring in money. Javed decides that his only chance of freedom might be to take an English class at school instead of economics that his father wants him to take. Javed meets Roops (Aaron Phagura) who loans him two Bruce Springsteen tapes, telling him to give them a listen, and instantly after hearing them, Javed is captivated by the words and heart found in every song. Javed’s life quickly becomes a nonstop listening and learning from Springsteen’s music, which he shares with Roops and Eliza (Nell Williams), a young activist that easily steals his heart. His English teacher, Miss Clay (Hayley Atwell) sees potential and urges Javed to pursue his writing, even though his father doesn’t see the point of pursuing a pointless career. As he begins to excel in his creative expression, Javed is torn between his family and his desire to make his own way in life. Soon Javed finds himself at odds with almost everyone in his life and he will have to decide how far he is willing to go and what he is willing to give up in order to follow his dreams.
Inspired by true events, this comedy holds a genuine sweetness and easygoing humor from start to finish. Kalra carries the lead role well, giving an honest depiction of music’s great impact in growing up. The soundtrack is perfectly selected to carry viewers deeper into the story’s highs and lows, further enhancing the reliability. Blinded by the Light is a must-watch for fans of Springsteen’s music, both old and new.
