From Good Boys.
Max (Jacob Tremblay), Lucas (Keith L. Williams), and Thor (Brady Noon) are three best friends dealing with the craziness of the changes that their recent start in sixth grade has brought on. They refer to themselves as the Beanbag Boys and do everything together, even if it leaves them slightly on the apart from the popular kids. When a classmate invites Max and his friends to a party and informs them that it it will be a kissing party, the boys are nervous, especially when Max finds out that his crush (Millie Davis) will also be attending the party. Since the boys have no experience kissing, they decide to use the new drone Max’s dad (Will Forte) just bought so they can spy on their teenage neighbor, Hannah (Molly Gordon), and her boyfriend (Josh Caras) to learn how to kiss. However, they instead find Hannah and her friend, Lily (Midori Francis), lounging by the pool instead, and when the girls take the drone to teach the boys a lesson, things quickly spiral out of control. In an attempt to get some leverage to get the drone back, Thor takes Hannah’s purse… which unbeknownst to them contains a pill bottle full of drugs. Now the boys have no option but to skip school, go across town to buy a new drone, and keep the drugs away from the girls, all before Max’s dad gets home to find his drone missing and grounds Max from the party.
The coming-of-age comedy might feature a young cast, but functions best as a chance for adult viewers to reminisce on the hilarious (mis)trials of growing up. Noon, Tremblay, and Williams are all hilarious and genuine, working well together while also standinf strong on their own throughout the entire film. The movie is saved by the boys’ innocence, because while the comedic content is very mature, it is drastically mellowed (except for the language) by their ignorance. While the story line will be unappealing to some, Good Boys is a funny and surprisingly entertaining movie.
