“But I’m so happy for her.”

From Dora and the Lost City of Gold.

As a little girl, Dora (Madelyn Miranda) spent her time exploring the jungles of South America with her explorer parents (Eva Longoria and Michael Peña) and cousin, Diego (Malachi Barton).  However, Diego long ago moved to the city and while teenage Dora (Isabela Moner) loves nothing more than exploring the jungle, she is not careful and her parents don’t believe she is responsible enough to join them on their search for Parapata, the lost city of gold.  So Dora is sent to California to live with her grandmother (Adriana Barraza), Diego (Jeff Wahlberg), and his parents.  High school is more difficult than Dora ever imagined and she can’t seem to find her place; she is only able to befriend a nerd, Randy (Nicholas Coombe), and angers the class president, Sammy (Madeleine Madden), and even embarrassed Diego.  However, when Dora, Diego, Sammy, and Randy are grouped together on a field trip, things go from awkward to terrible when several mercenaries (including Temuera Morrison and Christopher Kirby) kidnap Dora and her group mates in an attempt to track down Dora’s parents and the lost city.  The four teens find themselves captive in South America with no options until an old colleague of Dora’s parents, Alejandro (Eugenio Derbez), helps them escape from the mercenaries.  Dora and the others are left with no other option but for Dora to use her father’s journal to try and find her missing parents before the mercenaries and the mask-wearing talking fox, Swiper (voiced by Benicio del Toro), can find Parapata.

This comedy adventure is full of the perfect blend of action and nostalgia for older viewers and violence-free fun for younger viewers.  There are lots of elements to keep viewers of all ages entertained; action without gore, a plot with surprises, and jokes with ease.  Moner leads well, bringing her classic animated character to a real, full life.  Dora and the Lost City of Gold is a very enjoyable movie that the whole family will be pleasantly surprised to enjoy.
