“Anyone know what that means?”

From Hellboy.

Long ago, King Arthur and Merlin used Excaliber to defeat the powerful witch, Nimue (Milla Jovovich); they were only able to dismember and scatter her, but they were never able to truly kill her.  Hellboy (David Harbour) is a hunter and execution of monsters and other paranormal creatures, despite being a creature from Hell himself.  After a life of monster hunting, Hellboy has created some enemies throughout the world, sometimes including  secret societies that want to kill him before he brings on the prophesied end of the world, even though he has done nothing but protect humans from the dangers of evil.  One such monster seeking revenge against Hellboy for a humiliating defeat is Gruagach (Stephen Graham) who begins gathering Nimue’s hidden limbs so that she can defeat Hellboy once and for all. Groups and societies charged with protecting earth take a pause from trying to kill Hellboy and instead use him to stop Nimue’s return and the annihilation of mankind. Under the direction of his adoptive father (Ian McShane) and Beurea for Paranormal Research and Defense leader, Hellboy teams up with friend and psychic, Alice (Sasha Lane), and the distrustful agent of the British B.P.R.D. counterpart society (Daniel Dae Kim).  Tired of being charged with defending people that don’t want him, Hellboy still searches for a way to destroy Nimue before she destroys all that is good in the world.

A re-launching of the series this third Hellboy film is nothing if not bloody and violent, but it doesn’t seem to achieve much more than that.  Desperately trying to be a superhero movie, but failing miserably, this blend of genres from fantasy to horror leaves the viewer with a movie that feels very jumbled and confusing.  Harbour is a good pick for the lead as he gives Hellboy lots of life and attitude, especially when coupled with the breathtaking CGI and prosthetics work, but overall it’ll leave viewers wanting something more.  If viewers are looking for a no-thinking-required bloodbath action flick, look no further than Hellboy, but all other viewers are better off sticking with the 2004 and 2008 originals.
