From Marrowbone.
Fleeing from a terrifying past, a mother (Nicola Harrison) brings her children, Jack (George MacKay), Jane (Mia Goth), Billy (Charlie Heaton), and Sam (Matthew Stagg), to her American childhood home. Constantly looking over their shoulder, the children do manage to make one friend in next-door neighbor Allie (Anya Taylor-Joy) who shares their love of life and fantastic adventures, both real and imagined. Unfortunately, life is not happy for the children when their mother falls sick and dies, leaving Jack in charge of his younger siblings and urges him to keep them hidden until his 18th birthday when he can become their legal guardian. However, things quickly spiral out of control when the man (Tom Fisher) they’ve been hiding from finds them and threatens their life, safety, and freedom. Forced to take terrible actions Jack and his siblings now live in almost complete seclusion, trapped in a house with the dark secret. Only Jack leaves the property to go into town for food and to pay the rent all under their mother’s name; the only indulgence he allows himself is to visit with Allie who he is beginning to fall in love with. As the loan draws to a close and a young bank lawyer (Kyle Soller), jealous for Allie’s affection, begins to notice some irregularities about the mysterious family, so he begins to shed light on things that will shatter life at Marrowbone forever.
This thriller takes a little bit to get off the ground, but once the story is in full swing it is impossible to turn away. Since the family history is shrouded in secrecy, it adds to the unknown horror that lives inside the walls; the end is truly surprising, but works well in the movie as a whole. While not overtly a horror film, there are several moments that will have viewers’ hearts racing. The acting is solidly convincing especially from MacKay who leads well as a young man trying to lead his family through a terrible trauma. Marrowbone is definitely a must-see movie for anyone looking for an edge-of-your-seat thriller.
