“Come on, buddy.”

From Stuber.

After a case goes terribly wrong at the hands of an international drug trafficker, Tedjo (Iko Uwais), police detective Vic (Dave Bautista) and his partner (Karen Gillan) are helpless to stop Tedjo’s escape. Vic makes catching Tedjo his mission until his boss (Mira Sorvino) informs him that the feds are taking over his case.   After taking Vic to get Lasik surgery, his daughter (Natalie Morales) creates an Uber account for him so that he can still get around while his vision is blurry.  Unable to see and upset over the case, Vic doesn’t hesitate when an informant contacts him about a meet that Tedjo will be at that night, so Vic calls an Uber to transport him across town.  Stu (Kumail Nanjiani), when not working at a sporting goods store or trying to impress Becca (Betty Gilpin) the friend he’s secretly in love with, drives an Uber.  After a long series of bad rides, he’s desperately seeking a five-star review to keep him from losing his job for low ratings, so Stu gladly picks up Vic in hopes of a quick, easy, and enjoyable ride.  It quickly becomes apparent that the meek, safety-focused Stu is the complete opposite to the shoot-first-ask-questions-later veteran cop who forces him to drive all over with the threat of a low rating.  As Vic is busy tracking criminals and drug connections, Stu is desperately trying to find a way to end the ride and get home to the newly-single Becca.  As the crazy ride continues and the pair meet a variety of characters on both sides of the law (including Steve Howey, Scott Lawrence, Joshua Mikel, Rene Moran and Jimmy Tatro), the more apparent it becomes to both men that the only way to survive the night might be working together.

This Buddy comedy is full of laughs, violence, and twists that carry the simpler storyline along with ease.  Bautista is funny as the blurry-eyed tough guy, but the movie’s real humor comes from Nanjiani’s dry, sarcastic replies.  The action is impressive to watch unfold, and while the gore is not a constant presence on screen, it is intense for a few scenes.  Stuber is an easygoing movie filled with laughs that makes it the perfect comedy escape to enjoy.
