From Yesterday.
Jack (Himesh Patel) is a struggling musician who goes from one poorly-attended gig to the next with his lifelong friend and manager, Ellie (Lily James). Both his lack of success and parents (Sanjeev Bhaskar and Meera Syal) finally force Jack to call it quits as a songwriter, despite the protests of Ellie and his friends (Harry Michell and Sophia Di Martino). However, when the power blacks out for 12 seconds all across the world and Jack is hit by a bus, he wakes up to a world that doesn’t remember several key things, most notably the Beatles. Jack decides to sing and claim all of the classic songs as his own since the opportunity is too good to waste. Even with the great songs, Jack seems unable rise out of obscurity until he and Ellie befriend a guy (Alexander Arnold) with a small recording studio that tips the first domino for Jack’s almost overnight success. When Ed Sheeran (played by himself) hears Jack’s music, he invites him to open for him on an European tour, but as the opening act is an overwhelming success, Sheeran’s manager (Kate McKinnon) offers to be Jack’s new manager and provide him with all kinds of opportunities. Jack asks his friend Rocky (Joel Fry) as his roadie and the pair head off to America to begin recording all of the Beatles songs that Jack can remember. As Jack tries to remember the words to the classic songs while longing for everything he left behind with Ellie, the world is enamored with this used-to-be-nobody with the amazing ability to write and sing songs that touch the world. Buried in newfound success, Jack struggles with what to do… either carry on with the world-changing charade or let it go for the girl he left behind.
This fantastical look at a Beatles-less world is equally charming and humorous, with music that will rope in even the most reluctant of viewers. The style of the movie is nostalgically endearing, especially with the slightly-disheveled Patel leading opposite the sweet, quirky James. Viewers looking for a fun, feel-good movie need look no further than Yesterday.
