“*Flip* yeah!”

From Booksmart.

Best friends and bookworms Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) and Molly (Beanie Feldstein) have made it through high school together by skipping the parties, the craziness, and the stupidity of their classmates in order to focus instead on books and their successful futures. However, their acceptance into two of the country’s most prominent colleges are quickly diminished when Molly finds out the biggest partiers, and what she thought were the dumbest kids (Molly Gordon, Eduardo Franco, and Nico Hiraga), have also gotten into top colleges across the country. So on the night before graduation, Molly convinces Amy they should go to classmate Nick’s (Mason Gooding) party since it’s their last chance before they’re officially finished with high school. Another motivation for the party is that each of the girls has a crush on someone that they know is attending. Amy agrees to go, but the trouble’s only just beginning because they don’t know where Nick’s party is. The girls begin going around town trying to find the party before the night is over. Running into classmates (including Billie Lourd, Noah Galvin, and Skyler Gisondo), teachers (Jessica Williams), the principal (Jason Sudeikis), and avoiding Amy’s parents (Lisa Kudrow and Will Forte), Molly and Amy bounce from wrong party to wrong party in search of Nick’s. But even when they find the right party, the craziness is far from over.

This high school comedy is trying desperately to turn itself into a generational icon, but it really seems to miss its mark. Dever and Feldstein are both funny on their own, especially considering Dever’s brilliance with dry humor; however both actors really excel when they interact together. While the storyline is fun and surprising, over the top stereotypes and attitudes leaves it all feeling very muddled. If viewers are looking for a movie that requires no thought and highlights the some of the challenges of growing up, Booksmart is an acceptable option.
