From The Hustle.
Penny (Rebel Wilson) is a con artist that preys on easily exploitable men in New York City, but decides that possibilities will be endless if she moves her base of operations to Europe. Once she arrives in France, she meets Josephine (Anne Hathaway) who is also a con artist. With the help of an efficient and slightly corrupt police investigator (Ingrid Oliver) and her butler (Nicholas Woodeson), Josephine pulls cons of a higher quality on Europe’s richest men. After watching Penny at work, Josephine is afraid that Penny will ruin her home and work, so she tries to get Penny to leave, but Penny refuses and threatens to expose Josephine if she doesn’t help her become a better con artist. The two work together to pull off several heists, but things quickly fall apart when both refuse to give up and leave the city. The pair make a wager that whoever can get $500,000 from a visiting young app developer, Thomas (Alex Sharp), in the next week will be the winner and the loser will have to leave France for good. However, things don’t go as planned and Penny and Josephine are forced to work alongside each other while trying to beat each other to Thomas’ money.
This female-led comedy has a familiar, almost classic feel to its style for most of the film, whether that is from the settings or just the con artist protagonists is unclear, but it does add nicely to the nostalgia factor. Wilson is funny with her fast-talking and readiness to use physical comedy for a laugh, while Hathaway is refined in her skill, attitude, and subtle humor; together this odd pairing definitely pulls off a successful comedic battle of wits. Some of the jokes fall flat and Wilson can be too strong at a few points, but the story is interesting and there are some interesting twists that are pleasantly surprising. Overall, The Hustle is a movie filled with laughs for some carefree watching.
