“Thank you!”

From Breakthrough.

John Smith (Marcel Ruiz) is struggling to find his place in the world, especially in relation to his adoptive parents Joyce (Chrissy Metz) and Brian (Josh Lucas).  While Joyce is at odds with their church’s new, cool pastor, Jason (Topher Grace), John tries to find his balance between basketball, school, and his parents’ faith.  During a sleepover on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2015, John and his two friends (Nikolas Dukic and Isaac Kragten) go out to play on the frozen Lake Saint Louis, but they fall through the ice.  The other boys are able to get out of the water, but John is knocked unconscious and is lost below the surface.  15 minutes after going under, firefighters (Mike Colter and Victor Zinck Jr.) are miraculously able to find John and pull him out; John is then rushed to the hospital where an ER doctor (Sam Trammell) leads a team desperately trying find a pulse for almost an hour after the accident.  When Joyce is allowed to see John to say goodbye, she instead begins to pray over her son and his heart begins beating again.  John is transferred to a larger hospital where he can be cared for by a specialist (Dennis Haysbert), but despite his miraculous heartbeat returning, the prognosis is not good.  With the support of Pastor Jason and the entire church community, Joyce leads Brian, the doctors, and everyone she comes in contact with on a prayer-fueled refusal to give up faith in a miracle for John.

Based on the true story, this movie is equally inspirating and captivating.  For the most part, the drama is keyed down so that it can be spread out through the entire movie without being overwhelming.  Metz carries the movie perfectly in her role as the unrelenting mother, while Lucas and Grace bring heartfelt emotions to their roles.  While it is at its core a Christian movie, Breakthrough is a movie that will keep audiences from all walks of life captivated until the miraculous end.
