“Alright!”

From The Best of Enemies.

Life in 1971 Durham, North Carolina is hectic and full of turmoil as family man C.P. Ellis (Sam Rockwell), a gas station owner and president of the local Ku Klux Klan constantly finds himself at odds with black activist mother Ann Atwater (Taraji P. Henson) over various dealings around town.  While Ann is not an afraid to take on the town over any issue of injustice, her greatest battle comes when the black elementary school is almost completely destroyed due to an electrical fire and the only real option is to join the white and black elementary schools for the remainder of the year.  Both sides have strong opinions on the matter, so a delegator named Riddick (Babou Ceesay) is brought in to facilitate a charrette mediation and asks Ann and C.P. to cochair the group of diverse voters.  Over the following two weeks, both C.P. and Ann push for the result that they believe is right, but while they get to know each other and their backgrounds more, the line between their ideology and motivations becomes less clear.  While Ann fights to end school segregation once and for all, C.P. finds himself facing conflicting pressure from members of the Klan (such as Wes Bentley), the president of the city council (Bruce McGill), and his wife (Anne Heche).  As the day for the final vote draws closer, both Ann and C.P. watch the power struggle play out across town as each side fights for the deciding votes that rest in their hands.

Based on the true events, this movie features an almost unbelievable story line.  Henson and Rockwell balance each other out perfectly onscreen, but Henson’s transformation into her character is award-winning.  The strength of this movie comes from the display of both sides and opinions through the majority of the film, which allows both main characters to develop.  There are a few intense moments and racial slurs are used some, but The Best of Enemies is a powerful movie that should not be missed!
