“I hope that’s okay.”

From Shazam!

Charged with defending the earth from the Seven Deadly Sins, the ancient wizard Shazam (Djimon Hounsou) knows he is nearing the end of his life, so he has begun a search for a child that is pure of heart to take his place.  After testing dozens of children, he finally finds Billy Batson (Asher Angel) a foster kid desperate to find his long-lost mother who has spent the last 10 years of his life bouncing from home to home.  Billy is currently deciding when he wants to leave his new foster parents (Marta Milans and Cooper Andrews) and their ragtag bunch of foster kids (Grace Fulton, Jovan Armand, Ian Chen, and Faithe Herman) including the superhero fanatic Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer).  Shazam judges Billy worthy of his powers and transfers them to Billy, who only has to say the word “Shazam” to be transformed into a superhero (Zachary Levi) with super strength, speed, flight, and a host of other powers.  While it’s all fun and games for Billy and Freddy as they explore Billy’s new powers, things quickly become dangerously real when Doctor Sivana (Mark Strong) arrives bitter after Shazam’s rejection of him decades before because he was not pure of heart.  Billy soon learns that Sivana has released the Deadly Sins and they are using Sivana as a host for their powers and to take control of the world.  Billy must find a way to defeat Sivana while also protecting his new foster family, before the villain can figure out that the man in the suit is just a kid trying to figure everything out.

This superhero movie is full of action and humor, but what really stands out to viewers is the heart that the main characters display (both in regular and super form).  Angel and Grazer carry their leads with humor and strength, while Levi is the perfect portrayal of his character balancing the action and comedy perfectly.  The Seven Deadly Sins can be frightening for some viewers, but overall, Shazam! is a solidly fun origin story that audiences of all ages can enjoy.
